In the morning, you will arrive on an international flight that lands at O.R. Tambo International. This means that you can jump straight onto a safari flight that is bound for Phinda without losing a day due to a layover. As the plane soars over the savannah and wilderness, you can catch a glimpse of what is to come with such a serene and untouched land as it drifts beneath the wingtips. You will touch down and immediately start to see animals. Elephants and giraffes are usually conspicuous along the horizon in Phinda, and herds of buffalo may march about the dusty ground. From the airstrip to the villa, you will game drive, passing some of these iconic giants before settling into one of Africa’s most luxurious lodges.

From your bedroom window, you can look out upon zebras. There will be a plunge pool and large terrace, and both are relaxed spots for watching wildlife in its natural habitat. An outdoor shower will provide you with an opulent bush experience, and one highlight of Phinda is that you will not need a game drive in order to see wildlife. Here, you can rest and relax while still gaining first impressions of many species. On an afternoon game drive, you will get a little closer, and your guide will lead you on a loop of the reserve’s watering holes, which is where animals congregate and hope for safety in numbers. Back at your villa, you will dine beneath the stars as four-legged giants and acacia trees are silhouetted against the horizon.

Originally a Zulu hunting ground, the park was published as a protected reserve back in 1895, and it has been a haven for rhino conservation ever since. More than 1,000 black and white rhinos live here today, which is remarkable given that the park is less than 10% the size of the Kruger. On action-packed game drives, you will encounter both species. Early mornings are the best for viewing black rhinos, as this is the only time the bashful creatures are readily exploring out in the open. Private game drives can also reflect your mood. You may choose to indulge in a picnic and spend an hour beside a pool of hippos, or maybe you will want to choose to follow a hyena clan for two hours so you can understand more about their behavior. You can also decide on heading back to your camp earlier, so you can watch animals walk past from your camping chairs.

After leaving the national park, you will drive back to Phinda, where you will board a morning flight to the Greater Kruger. You will touch down in a very different wilderness before transferring to the Sabi Sands, which is the most legendary of all South Africa’s safari destinations. The Sabi Sands is a collection of private reserves that shares an unfenced border with Kruger National Park.
