Day 1
Sao Miguel Island – Enduring Beauty and Tranquility of the Azores
The Azores rise like sentinels in the ocean with dramatic pinnacles that once looked upon explorers that made their first intrepid journeys across the Atlantic. These are islands of remarkable beauty crafted by the drama of volcanoes and surrounded by the serenity of the waves. Sao Miguel is the largest and most developed of the islands, with the small town of Ponta Delgada as your base for the first several nights. From your plane window, you will know why it is called the Green Island, with pastoral fields blurring into lush forests and emerald waters. You will also get a sense of how isolated these islands are, a third of the way from Lisbon to New York.
A quiet coastline is within a few minute's walk from your hotel, and the cute little streets harken back to the legacy of the whalers while the backdrop of volcanic cliffs can make anyone feel humbled by nature. Down by the water the colors swirl with greens and blues of all imaginable tones. You will find that this is a landscape where the children can explore freely and safely, and one where nature is of such an impressive scale, it can make anyone feel inspired. This is also a landscape where you can go on an adventure together, with hardly another person in sight. You will be greeted at the airport as you arrive and transfer to a family hotel in Ponta Delgada, where the day is at your leisure. Relax at the pool, explore the museum and convent in the town, and then take a walk down narrow streets to the southern coastline as you all settle in.

Detailed Description
The Azores are some of Europe’s best-kept secrets as these volcanic islands are dotted in the heart of the Atlantic Ocean and are home to a dazzling natural history and a thrilling sense of wilderness. Dolphins gather in huge numbers as volcanic pinnacles provide a constant back-drop and walking trails connect lava-soil vineyards with subterranean energy. The islands are mystical from the air and magical on the ground, an archipelago of adventure that is ideally suited for family travel. With so few visitors and so many unique activities, the Azores are almost tailor-made for families with children aged eight and over as eight is the minimum age for many of the selected activities. These are islands that you can explore as a family, with private tours that bring timeless moments for you all.
Handcrafted for families, this 8-day luxury tour will help you to discover the best of the Azores. Start on the Green Island and Sao Miguel will bring a relaxed introduction to your experience. Old-world history is found around your hotel in Ponta Delgada, local villages will immerse you in their distinctive culture, and there is the relaxed atmosphere that you would expect from a tropical island escape. Spend the next day on a private guided tour of the eastern side of the island, where the simple pleasures of pastoral life are woven into the engaging beauty of the coast and the crater pools. Head further into the wilderness the next day, first with a boat trip that will have your family swimming and snorkeling with wild dolphins, perhaps even bottlenose, spotted and Risso’s in a single morning. Pass the afternoon on a jeep safari and traverse the natural reserves and landscapes that may feel beyond your imagination.
Early the next morning you will fly to Faial, and you will immediately understand why it is called the Blue Island. Follow the trails around the edge of Capelinhos Volcano, admire the views from the epic Caldeira, and see how black rocks and ash meet the endless Atlantic. The afternoon will give you a sense of the historical as Horta is a town known to transatlantic sailors. Nearby Pico Island will provide a day-trip destination the next day with a UNESCO World Heritage trail taking you on an adventure through subterranean life to lava soil vineyards and into rugged escarpments with fascinating colors. The afternoon is also volcanic, with peculiar lava beds and lagoons surrounding the old whaling ports.
For your last couple of nights, you will return to Sao Miguel to spend the day on the dramatic western side of the island. Explore the jade-green and blue of Sete Cidades, initially bumping across the landscape on mountain bikes and then paddling in kayaks for a journey through landscapes that would not look out of place on another planet. Bubbling hot springs and oozing mud pools provide the relaxed focus on your final day, along with the exquisite gardens at Terra Nostra. Like most of the other days, you will also get to dine on tradition, share stories with a unique group of people, and find out what hides in the bizarre volcanic archipelago.
