Detailed Description

Spain has always welcomed the architectural pioneer: the wealth of eclectic old cities plundered on indulgent and opulent displays of power. As the cities grew rich they invested in a unique style; Mudegar Eastern exoticism in Andalusia, Gothic and Renaissance in the towns of Spain's Golden Age, art nouveau in modernist Barcelona, baroque and Romanesque designs favored by the church. When the various kingdoms' prosperity dissipated the buildings remained, each a glorious ode to wealth and artistic beauty. Viewed in isolation, each of these architectural monuments is a remarkable attraction. But as a collection they reveal so much more, taking you on a journey through the romantic history of Spain, allowing you to relive the conquests and the kings, the religious ideology and the intellectual glory.

The tour starts in Andalusia, where Islamic and Eastern influences exquisitely mark the cities of Seville, Cordoba, and Granada. The pre-12th century design has been repurposed and elaborated, the mosques converted into grand cathedrals as more recent Renaissance styles mingle on the streets. Spend three days in Seville, an eclectic start to the vacation, before two nights in Granada. All transfers are by luxury vehicles and a specialist architectural guide accompanies you; the guide narrates the hidden tales found in the corners of buildings and deserted towers.

From days six to ten you cross the Spanish kingdoms, reliving the tales of conquistadores and religious crusades from Toldeo to Avila. Spend the evenings in sublime medieval towns, lost in the secrets that hide behind 11th century city walls. And spend the days exploring the architecture that was erected during the Spanish Golden Age. Spend two nights in both Toledo and Avila, ancient towns seemingly straight from a fairytale and fulfilling all notions of old-world romance. As you continue north, you stop at the Segovia castle and the decadent El Escorial before arriving in Madrid in the late afternoon of day ten.

The final few days are dedicated to Spain's biggest cities. Explore the unrivaled art of Madrid and lose a few hours on the majestic Plaza Mayor. A high-speed first-class train takes you to Barcelona. But before seeing the works of Gaudi, the day is inspired by the city's other modernista, Montaner. Watch an evening performance in his Catalan music hall then complete the architectural journey with a whole day focusing on Gaudi's surreal work. This is a vacation that continually impresses both history and grandeur. For many centuries, Spain led the world in art and architecture; this itinerary connects the individual dots for a complete portrait of old-world glory.

Spain Tour Review: Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, Malaga, Toledo, Granada, 10 Nights

The owners of Zicasso’s tour company were amazing from start to finish. They curated a custom trip for us to Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, Málaga, Toledo, and Granada. They listened to our requests and came up with a brilliant itinerary that included personal drivers, hotels, dining recommendations, and tour guides. They were also so quick to respond to our questions and pivot our plans when needed. This was a very special 30th-anniversary trip for us and they knocked it out of the park.

Spain Travel Review: Madrid, Toledo, Sevilla, Ronda, Malaga, Granada, Jerez, Museums, Flamenco, Cooking Class, Sherry Tasting, Alhambra, 9 Nights

I know we worked together on content, so none of the activities or the schedule were a surprise. We enjoyed every activity and just loved Spain. Our trip was worry-free and we were in the country during the power outage. We were not able to visit a cathedral due to the power outage, but were able to do a different tour. Our guide was enthusiastic and we barely noticed any inconvenience.

Each guide was on time and personable. We had a couple of substitutes and that was not noticeable at all. In general, each guide was knowledgeable and we learned so much.

Our first guide, in Madrid, was so kind when he realized jet lag was going to cut our tour short – not his fault. He was the best choice for our first tour. He was so knowledgeable and helped to orient us to Madrid. It was so great to have a personal guide so we could ask questions.

Toledo was fantastic. We loved the guide and the city. The train ride was our first and we had to navigate the train station, but we did just fine after a few wrong turns. We took the bus to the station. The bus worked great. We were exhausted from our day in Toledo, but still walked from the train station. The information on how to get to the station was accurate and it was a lovely walk.

Sevilla was magical. We were surprised when our driver drove through a public square to let us out to walk to the hotel!  We loved our tour, really liked the hotel, and had great meals in the restaurant. We got to know the bartender and she helped us experiment with local wines.

Our trip to Ronda was beautiful and our guide and driver were both excellent, especially our driver, who had to work around a running and walking event going on that meant our meeting spot was inaccessible. But he was on time and close, and we made it work!

Our trip to the olive oil museum was great, but we were part of a group and some of the people in the group were just stupid. I am allergic to olive trees and my allergies completely kicked up. We enjoyed the tour and bought olive oil, but I just couldn’t understand why some people on the tour were so rude.

The wine tasting also got us a spontaneous flamenco demonstration, which was fantastic. We stayed and did a wine tasting with the owner. We could have stayed all afternoon. She was lovely and interesting, and we enjoyed our time there very much.

Málaga was a joy and it was there we had the power outage. We had a great tour with our guide, who took so many pictures of us and slowed down to compensate for my tired legs. Touring was catching up with me. The Picasso Museum was open and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We loved our hotel and were very grateful there was a good restaurant with an excellent bar, and we took advantage of that!

Granada was worth a visit and our trip to the Alhambra was amazing; our guide was five-star.

Spain, Morocco Trip Review: Madrid, Seville, Granada, Gibraltar, Malaga, Cordoba, Casablanca, Oualidia, Marrakech, Tapas Tour, 17 Days

The custom trip and itinerary were developed by Zicasso’s travel company and they made numerous recommendations for exploring, starting in Spain, in Madrid, and continuing down to numerous Andalusian cities, including Seville, Granada, Gibraltar, Málaga, and Córdoba.

Not only was the itinerary prepared with great detail and consideration, but every effort was taken to ensure the lodging requested met five-star requirements. Drivers and guides were assigned to us at all of our destinations, and this included airport arrivals and departures. Drivers and guides were not only punctual, they were personable and extremely knowledgeable, with decades of experience.

Our trip continued to Morocco, where we flew into Casablanca from Málaga. Again, airport connections were perfect and we had VIP arrival service on landing. Our driver and guide were aligned with us for the week we spent between Oualidia and Marrakech. Lodging was exceptional and our expectations were certainly exceeded.

Furthermore, the travel company made it a point to communicate with us openly over WhatsApp, answering the few questions we had in a prompt manner and checking in with us throughout the trip.

This is the first time I have 100% used a travel company and I could not have been more pleased with the delivery of the trip and the overall cost.

Spain Vacation Review: History, Architecture, Hiking, E-Biking, Barcelona, Caminito del Rey, Marbella, 2 Weeks

Zicasso's travel specialists did a great job for us. They clearly listened to us and curated an experience that was made specifically for us. It checked all of the boxes and more.

Highlights were the local tour guides in each city. It was great to meet and get to know local people, learn so much history, see the architecture (Gaudí in Barcelona and the awesome palaces and cathedrals that we visited), the Montserrat hike, Caminito del Rey (which was absolutely better with a guide), and the Marbella e-bike adventure.

The hotels were wonderful; all unique and all great choices. We came home happy and tired, which is the sign of a good trip for us (since we do not ever sit on beaches or at pools and relax!).

Spain Family Travel Review: Madrid, Toledo, Seville, Cordoba, Barcelona, Cathedrals, Mosques, Cooking Class, Tapas, Biking, 9 Nights

The recommended activities were amazing for our trip.

We started in Madrid, then went to Toledo, Seville, Córdoba, and Barcelona. Highlights for my kids (15, 13, and 13) were the cathedrals, mosque, cooking class, walking tapas tour and e-bike tour.

All of our drivers and tour guides were prompt, knowledgeable, and listened to our preferences.

The hotels in Madrid and Seville were perfection and located close to major areas.

The only reason I gave the trip four instead of five stars was that the travel company made a mistake booking our hotel in Barcelona. We found out the night before that our hotel was switched and the new hotel was not in the best area and far from major attractions. The company did offer to reimburse us for taxis and sent us a gift and apology letter. However, I would have preferred to book my own hotel in Barcelona but the day before it was too late for me to research and change the hotel. That particular experience marred what was an otherwise fantastic trip.
