Madrid – Arrival to Madrid and Tailored Picnic in Retiro Park

You will arrive at Madrid’s major international airport, which provides all the necessary comforts and luxuries for the weary traveler. Ready to whisk you away to your luxury hotel, a private transfer will whisk you from the busy terminal to the city center, where you will find your luxurious hotel that fit for royalty. After you settle in, you will be greeted by your private guide who will acquaint you with the Spanish capital by giving you some general information and a short tour of the Centro Historico or old center of the city. This will provide you and your partner with the opportunity to stretch your legs after your journey and take in this new environment at a reasonable pace. Your introduction to Spain will conclude with a prepared picnic that will be waiting for you at El Retiro Park, which is the famous common area to the East of the center that boasts miles of walking paths and numerous places for you to spend time to yourselves.

Spain has been a top European travel destination for centuries. Madrid, which has remained the Spanish capital since 1561, is no exception and possesses all the art, food, music, and architecture that you would expect from such a cosmopolitan city. The founding of the city dates back much further than 1561, and you can still see the occasional reminder of its medieval past as it pokes through the more recent development. The city center stretches between the Palacio Real, which is an 18th-century royal palace that is loosely based on Versailles, and El Retiro Park. This space contains crisscrossing allies and wider boulevards that offer you secluded resting places to find refreshment in addition to hip shops that display some of the latest in Spanish fashion.

As you stroll through the gardens of El Retiro park, you will see plenty of evidence to support how European city parks occupy the important role of offering a source of diversion for the locals. It is big enough to offer you the feelings of while also feeling small enough that there is always an outdoor cafe or vendor nearby to offer you a refreshing treat. As you savor the contents of your tailored picnic, you will be able to sample some Spanish snacks all while participating in an exclusive Spanish pastime of spending your afternoon in the once-private playground of Spanish royalty.

Detailed Description

Spain stands at the intersection of many worlds. Whether geographic or cultural, the unique location of this country affords its major cities a cosmopolitan feel that adds to its charisma. From sports to spirituality and from the past to the Paella, there is something for everyone in Spain, and this adventure was designed for those couples who are desiring an introduction to nearly all that Spain has to offer.

Across nine days of luxurious accommodations and private tours, your travels will take you to the central highlands of Madrid, the Andalusian splendor of Seville, and finally to the rugged shores of Barcelona. In each of these destinations, knowledgeable instructors and guides will be waiting to answer your questions. In Madrid, you will imitate royalty with a curated picnic in El Retiro Park, which was the previous private estate of Spain’s ruling class. In Seville, you will indulge your senses in a visit to an Andalusian spa, where you will dip into the thermal baths for the ultimate, relaxing experience. Next, Barcelona will beckon to you with the promise of savory seafood dishes and a visit to the nearby slopes of Montserrat.

The best times to travel are mid-Spring and Fall when the crowds have not reached a peak, and the blooming bouquets and gardens of Madrid and Seville offer their colorful contributions to the eyes and noses of visitors. Likewise, temperatures during these seasons are usually mild with comfortable clothes and shoes being the recommended fashion. Luckily though, the majority of Spain’s culinary, musical, and cultural heritage is accessible year-round, furnishing enough insights for even the most curious traveler.

Spain Vacation Review: History, Architecture, Hiking, E-Biking, Barcelona, Caminito del Rey, Marbella, 2 Weeks

Zicasso's travel specialists did a great job for us. They clearly listened to us and curated an experience that was made specifically for us. It checked all of the boxes and more.

Highlights were the local tour guides in each city. It was great to meet and get to know local people, learn so much history, see the architecture (Gaudí in Barcelona and the awesome palaces and cathedrals that we visited), the Montserrat hike, Caminito del Rey (which was absolutely better with a guide), and the Marbella e-bike adventure.

The hotels were wonderful; all unique and all great choices. We came home happy and tired, which is the sign of a good trip for us (since we do not ever sit on beaches or at pools and relax!).

Spain Trip Review: Madrid, Barcelona, Tarragona, Sitges, Wine Tour, 8 Nights

Our trip was fantastic. The guides were excellent. The Madrid wine tour guide was excellent, our guide for the walking tour of Barcelona was excellent, our guide for the walking tour of Madrid city was excellent, and our guide for Tarragona and Sitges was excellent. We were so pleased with all the tours that I will not change anything for our next trip with you guys. I appreciate your company and the way you handle things. Zicasso’s travel specialist was so helpful. Thank you so much. I can't wait to do this all over again.

Spain Tour Review: Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, Malaga, Toledo, Granada, 10 Nights

The owners of Zicasso’s tour company were amazing from start to finish. They curated a custom trip for us to Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, Málaga, Toledo, and Granada. They listened to our requests and came up with a brilliant itinerary that included personal drivers, hotels, dining recommendations, and tour guides. They were also so quick to respond to our questions and pivot our plans when needed. This was a very special 30th-anniversary trip for us and they knocked it out of the park.

Spain Family Travel Review: Madrid, Toledo, Seville, Cordoba, Barcelona, Cathedrals, Mosques, Cooking Class, Tapas, Biking, 9 Nights

The recommended activities were amazing for our trip.

We started in Madrid, then went to Toledo, Seville, Córdoba, and Barcelona. Highlights for my kids (15, 13, and 13) were the cathedrals, mosque, cooking class, walking tapas tour and e-bike tour.

All of our drivers and tour guides were prompt, knowledgeable, and listened to our preferences.

The hotels in Madrid and Seville were perfection and located close to major areas.

The only reason I gave the trip four instead of five stars was that the travel company made a mistake booking our hotel in Barcelona. We found out the night before that our hotel was switched and the new hotel was not in the best area and far from major attractions. The company did offer to reimburse us for taxis and sent us a gift and apology letter. However, I would have preferred to book my own hotel in Barcelona but the day before it was too late for me to research and change the hotel. That particular experience marred what was an otherwise fantastic trip.

Spain Trip Review: Madrid, Toledo, Seville, Cordoba, Ronda, Granada, Local Cuisine and Wine, Private Guides, Museums, 10 Nights

This was a perfect tour. We stayed in fine hotels in great locations. Our tour guides in Madrid, Toledo, Seville, Córdoba, Ronda, and Granada were outstanding in every way. The restaurant choices provided were spot-on. We enjoyed dining in the restaurants we selected from the lists provided. The food and wine in Spain are excellent.

We were able to meet the owner of Zicasso’s tour company and he was kind, knowledgeable, and a thorough professional. We are glad we found his company to manage our Spain tour and will look to book with his agency for a tour of northern Spain soon.

Also, the private drivers we rode with were nice and professional. The trains in Spain are clean and run on time, with very comfortable seats in first class.

For anyone who would like to tour Spain, we strongly recommend our travel company. We had a good pace to the schedule and experienced so much in a short, 10-day trip. The plan was thoughtful and thorough. We just had to show up at the airport and the rest was easy. As an older couple, and having traveled a lot in Europe the last three years, we know the difference a wonderful travel agency can make versus a bus tour, river cruise, or planning the trip ourselves. The best way to see Spain, in our view, is to use a high-quality agency. We appreciated all that our agent and his team did for us, including the 24/7 emergency contact numbers, and feel visiting Spain is best by employing this travel company. It truly was far superior to the other travel methods we have used in Europe.

Working with the company was easy. Zoom, phone calls, emails, etc., were all methods of communication. The collaboration was excellent.

As noted, we will plan to work with this team again and look forward to our next journey with them.
