London – First Night in the Heart of London

London overwhelms at first. Monuments rise upon the skyline, narrating centuries of changing design, Big Ben to the Shard and beyond. Elegant townhouses line central streets, a glimmer of old glory still standing proudly amidst the changing face of the capital. Red double-decker buses and black Hackney carriages (traditional London taxis) pass by. You see tube station signs, statuesque heroes, plus all those other snippets that make the British capital so unique. All this and you’ve not reached the hotel yet. Transfer from the airport to the heart of London and reach your five-star suite just steps from the Thames. While London is huge, it’s remarkable how much of the city is within a small and walkable central area either side of the river.

A day is left free for any exploration according to your mood. Combine a hearty pub meal and a pint of craft bitter with the jet lag, and you’ll probably be asleep before long. The late Victorian-era pubs are a good place to be on the first evening of a food tour. Standards have improved enormously in recent decades, going from pub grub to gourmet cuisine without changing the menu. Think lamb shank, shepherd’s pie, fish, and chips, or a meaty pie that only Britain could produce. In recent years, the world has seen a craft beer revolution; London pubs have been pulling cask ales and bitters for centuries before it became fashionable. There’s always a unique pint to swill down the food.

Detailed Description

London and Paris can be hard cities to visit. There’s so much to do, so many places to be, so much to see and experience. You can’t ever see it all even if you live there. So you need some focus, something to guide you through the neighborhoods and never-ending landmarks, a lens from which to explore the famous capitals. This handcrafted tour isn’t just for food lovers. It’s for the curious and intrigued, the traveler who wants to admire the iconic sights but see more than just the Eiffel Tower and Big Ben. Food is your lens, the raison d’etre that satisfies the soul and indulges all the senses. A food tour is not just about what you taste. It’s where a food lovers tour of London and Paris is able to take you.

Food is universal. It also has little use for the status quo in London and Paris. You’re equally likely to find something tasty down an atmospheric Victorian lane as a glamorous royal eatery. Food also takes you to neighborhoods that don’t always see a tourist’s eye, markets that hum with tradition, people passionate about their craft, and scenes that transcend ideas of a modern European capital. You can never see everything in London or Paris. But with several nights in each city, you can delve into the famous and the unknown, with every turn bringing another culinary standout.

British food has a terrible reputation, one that’s unfounded in the modern era. There is more to the cuisine that greasy fry-ups, especially in London. After a relaxed first evening in the capital, you taste the best of British on a London food tour, everything from Welsh salami to indulgent pies and champagne-style bubbles. Tour the markets, sample the organic, and follow the journey from farm to table. The next day has a regal feel, the royal sites of Central London combined with a famous high tea experience at the Ritz. You discover London at your own pace before a spot of Michelin dining takes the foodie experience from the east-end market to glitz and glamor.

Take the train to Paris and step out into the city of lights. Stroll the River Seine for an overview of the most famous sights, then step into the Louvre Museum for a VIP tour with wine tasting. Visit Saint-Germain, the iconic home of chocolatiers and macarons, place to satisfy your sweet cravings, and get your hands sticky. Montmartre is another neighborhood best viewed through a foodie lens, stories of the impressionists combining with delicate street flavors. Discover the Palace of Versailles and return to the city for tutored wine and cheese tasting in a traditional bistro, plus Michelin dining to round off this eight-day tour.

France Tour Review: Versailles, Chartres, Clos Luce, Apocalypse Tapestry, 2 Weeks

Everything went well, as planned, with only two minor issues: on the visit to Versailles with a guide, when attempting to enter the gardens with the guide, she noticed that she did not have the proper tickets, but a quick phone call to the travel company and the guide was given the go-ahead to pay for the ticket to access the garden; as we had not received one voucher necessary to enter an abbey on a self-guided tour, we had the vouchers for the audio guides, but not for the entrance to the abbey, and again, a quick phone call to the travel company, the vouchers were sent immediately.

The preparation for the trip went smoothly with a phone call from Paris to our home and then various messages and changes through Zicasso. Payments were made without problems and suggestions were provided in view of our budget and interests.

England, France Family Tour Review: London, Cambridge, Paris, Seine River Cruise, 10 Days

We just returned from a fantastic family vacation through Paris, London, and Cambridge, planned with care by our travel agent. Traveling with two teenagers can be a tall order, but the mix of activities kept everyone engaged and excited.

There were a few small hiccups, like mismatched names on some activity bookings and unexpected requests for payment on experiences we thought were already covered—but the agent was quick to respond and got everything sorted smoothly, which we really appreciated. One of the hotels didn’t quite live up to the promised 4-star standard, which was a little disappointing, but didn’t dampen the overall experience.

Standout Moments:

Dinner cruise on the Seine: Absolute highlight! Gorgeous views, great food, and the magic of drifting past Paris landmarks at night.

London tour guide: HUGE kudos to our guide! He struck that perfect balance of informative and entertaining, keeping the teens intrigued and involved the entire time. Not an easy feat!

Despite a few bumps, the trip gave us lasting memories, and we’re grateful to our travel agent for putting together an enriching adventure for our family.

Ireland, Scotland, England Family Trip Review: Edinburgh, Stonehenge, Windsor Castle, Cliffs of Moher, History, Castle, Local Cuisine, Scenery, Art, 21 Days

Zicasso's trip planner worked with my family for the better part of a year planning our big family trip. She provided exceptional service and planned every detail of our trip. We have a large family, with lots of moving parts. There were many changes in the itinerary along the way and she rolled with all the many changes. She was always polite, courteous, and graceful in her many interactions with our family.

She listened carefully during our initial conversations to help us plan the best trip possible. Being a large family, with multiple generations, she really created the best possible experience, taking in everyone's wishes. Working with her was very relieving, knowing she was taking care of all the details.

Our family's trip took us from the States to Ireland, Scotland, and England. We traveled on planes, trains, ferry, and drove a car. Our trip planner arranged every detail meticulously. We stayed in lovely, quaint, boutique hotels, ate the most wonderful foods, saw the amazing sights, and UNESCO World Heritage Sites across all three countries. From the Cliffs of Moher to the Culloden Moor Memorial to Stonehenge to castles grand and desolate; from beautiful cathedrals to old abbey ruins; from little country pubs to Michelin-starred restaurants; and even spending a couple days in an actual 17th-century castle, every minute was amazing! Truly amazing!
