Detailed Description
Incense swirls in a mountaintop temple as your ears are teased by ringing gongs and the wind rushes through the hair in verdant rainforest, your family zip-lining across the canopy. Evocative shouts mingle with vibrant colors at a Bangkok floating market and ancient temples have been overtaken by trees at Angkor Wat as you learn the history on a family treasure hunt. In Thailand and Cambodia, there are so many unique experiences that every day brings something wildly different to excite and entertain. There is local culture, witnessed at monuments, and lived out in villages and you have a great heritage to uncover, much of it preserved into the 21stcentury. The landscapes are sublime and range from rice paddies and bicycle trails to a tropical island of white sand indulgence.
This handcrafted family vacation takes you to four of the region’s best destinations, each of them connected by local flights. Bangkok is your regional introduction, a busy and bustling city that is full of treasures when you have good guides to lead you. Chiang Mai is the highland retreat, immersing you in old-world spirituality and the grandeur of nature. Siem Reap is your four-night base in Cambodia, where you mix local experiences with the majesty of Angkor Wat, a temple complex beyond what the imagination can conjure. And then finally the beach with nights spent on Koh Samui for lots of space and serenity to be together as a family.
Bangkok can be a whirlwind of new impressions for children, but with a good central hotel, you can escape the noise, relax around the pool, and save your energy for two days spent exploring. Spend your second day in the Thai capital, going up and down the river, riding in a rickshaw, and admiring the city’s iconic attractions. The following morning, you can paddle around a floating market before cycling amongst the rice paddies, and you will all be amazed at how easy it is to get out into nature when staying in the capital.
Fly north to Chiang Mai and watch the sunset from Doi Suthep, the pre-eminent temple that stands high above the city. Receive a monk’s blessing and get to know the quiet, and mostly pedestrianized, lanes where there is a wonderful night market for you to wander in the evening. The next couple of days are spent amid nature with one day alongside the elephants and another day in the rainforest. Your activities are tailored to all ages, and there is so much space in this part of Thailand, so some can let off steam while others put their feet up and unwind.
Your direct flight will take you back south and into Cambodia and Siem Reap, the cute town on the edge of Angkor Wat. Explore the temples on a treasure hunt for an excellent way to keep the children involved so you can extend your exploration of the site. Also on the program, you will find a butterfly center, other temple ruins, superb sunset spots and welcoming Cambodian villages. You will meet with local families, quad bike to see temples, and watch the kids do an art class with villagers. So while Angkor Wat is the chief attraction, four days in Cambodia are more diverse than the temple complex that is now overrun by nature.
Complete your family vacation by returning to Thailand for several days on Koh Samui, an island that is quiet enough for doing nothing, but has enough to do should you need some entertainment. Spend lazy days on the sand, go snorkeling or even diving, hike through the forests, and enjoy languid evenings of seafood and sunsets. It is the timeless way to end vacation to Cambodia and Thailand, the kind of island that made this region such an exciting travel destination. Natural beauty, lazy days, and space to spend time with those you love.
