Detailed Description

Great family vacations are for the whole family. There needs to be enough excitement and originality to impress the children, a laid-back rhythm to help the parents unwind, and a continuous offering of experiences that make everyone smile in wonderment. This handcrafted family vacation tour to Australia and New Zealand effortlessly delivers, bringing the magic of a whole continent to the exultant faces of the whole family. Travel time is kept to a minimum, with four unique bases used to explore the surrounding area: Sydney and Cairns in Australia, and Queenstown and Rotorua in New Zealand. That means less repacking of the suitcase and a minimizing of travel stress. Local flights connect the destinations, and a rental car is waiting on arrival, enabling you to explore at a pace that suits the family.

Start in Sydney, one of the planet’s most iconic and unforgettable cities. Climb the exposed spine of Sydney Harbour Bridge, take a gentle river cruise through the urbanity, and drive your rental vehicle to discover dazzling beach suburbs and the omnipresent nature. Meander into the majestic Blue Mountains, a mystical haze covering eucalyptus-clad valleys at this World Heritage Site. There’s even a stop at a wildlife sanctuary on the way back, a chance for the kids to get close to exotic koalas and kangaroos.

Fly north to tropical Cairns, an idyllic beach destination surrounded by an exuberant rainforest. It’s tempting to laze away the next four days on the endless miles of deserted coastline. But Cairns really ignites everyone’s imagination. Take a child-friendly cruise to the Great Barrier Reef, with trained lifeguards assisting first-time snorkelers and a fully submersible ship ensuring everyone can witness the marine wonder. Spend time in an ancient rainforest and also enjoy an eye-opening look at traditional Aboriginal culture. The whole family can discover delectable bush tucker and create their own piece of Aboriginal art.

The itinerary then crosses to New Zealand, the landscapes immediately imbuing a sense of the surreal and untamed. The South Island is rugged and mountainous, as your Queenstown base is surrounded by beautiful peaks and tranquil sapphire lakes. Relive famous movies scenes with a trip to the famous filming locations, and then ogle the aesthetics from the sky, as the family takes a helicopter ride across the bewildering fjords. Landing on a hidden glacier epitomizes the kind of originality to expect on this luxury vacation.

Rotorua is your final base, with the rolling green landscape reminiscent of mythical Middle Earth. Take the children to the enchantment of Hobbiton, the movie set completely untouched since filming for The Lord of the Rings finished. Then enjoy a day of mountain biking through these lost landscapes, with a variety of trails available for every fitness level. And the above is just a snapshot of the possibilities. There's also jet boat riding, exploding geysers, cute wallabies, nature walks through 80-million-year-old forests, and a spellbinding Maori welcome to New Zealand.

Australia Tour Review: Melbourne, Phillip Island, Tasmania, Hobart, Freycinet, Maria Island, Great Barrier Reef, Sydney, Bridge Climb, Opera Tour, 13 Days

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Australia and, with the help of Zicasso’s travel specialists and the team, we were taken care of in every way possible. Working with the travel specialist was a breeze; she helped bring our trip ideas to life while also offering some great suggestions of her own. During the trip, we were also supported by the team when we needed to reconfirm details or track down missing documents (like our park pass, which we had forgotten to bring) and finalize all of the trip details.

The hotels were stunning and each excursion was more incredible than the last. Our guides were friendly, knowledgeable, and professional, which made each experience even more enjoyable.

We highly recommend using this travel agency and Zicasso for an unforgettable trip!

New Zealand Vacation Review: Christchurch, Queenstown, Doubtful Sound, Te Anau, Lake Tekapo, Kaikoura, Cruise, Bike Tour, Glowworm Caves, 3-Week Trip

We had a great trip! All the logistics and connections were spot-on. If I had it to plan again, I would incorporate fewer long drives and possibly take one or two short flights. We had three days of actual driving five-plus hours, which turned into six to seven hours with stops.

Highlights included the Christchurch tour, the Around the Basin bike tour in Queenstown, the Doubtful Sound overnight cruise, biking around Lake Tekapō, as well as Kaikōura, and the glowworm caves in Te Anau. The TranzAlpine train was enjoyable. However, the mountain scenery encountered was not as dramatic as that seen in the more southern areas.

Unfortunately, our helicopter ride to the glaciers in Franz Josef was rained out. Our days in Queenstown were muted with fog, so both the gondola dinner experience, as well as the dinner cruise on Lake Wakatipu, were somewhat compromised. Both activities involved large buffets, with mediocre food and lots of tourists.

We enjoyed the Fiordland jet-boat ride and the biking back option. I felt the portion on the water was a bit light on the 360 turns and heavy on the nature focus. The Dark Sky experience was a disappointment, as wind conditions only allowed our group to go to the crater, not the observatory. Add to that a very bright, near-full moon and the conditions were not ideal for viewing.

After that late-night experience, the next day we drove to Lake Tekapō (with stops, six to seven hours). Between the time in the car and a developing hip issue that could compromise the required hiking, we decided not to drive one-and-a-half hours the next morning to Mount Cook for the Tasman Glacier tour.

Kaikōura is an attractive, quiet coastal town that was a nice final stop on our itinerary. We rented bikes and traversed the Peninsula Trail, including the seal colony.

All of our accommodations were in line with the parameters that we gave Zicasso’s travel specialist regarding location, ratings, and features. We especially enjoyed our hotel in Christchurch, our hotel in Te Anau, and our inn in Kaikōura. The motel in Lake Tekapō was the most dated property; however, the location was fabulous.

Again, we had a wonderful trip and I have already recommended this travel company to our friends, who are booked later this year.
