You can always try those websites like Orbitz, Travelocity, Hotel.com if you're looking solely for a cheap place to stay. Anywhere on the strip (the newer side from TI going south, I believe towards Luxor, will be pretty moderate with higher prices for weekend nights. Sometimes Expedia will have a $50 off discount if you book with them. I got a room for 1 night at Sahara (not the greatest, I know) for $40 one time off them.
The hotel prices fluctuate a lot in Las Vegas. The best time to book hotels is 2 weeks to 1 month ahead of time. Check back often on the hotel website of your choice to keep track of the prices. Hotels on the Strip will always charge a premium. One of the nice hotels in Downtown Las Vegas is the Golden Nugget and is just as nice as a hotel on the strip.
